An exciting evening of inspiration and creativity unravelled at the annual Southern Guild Gallery Design Foundation Awards in Woodstock, Cape Town on the 23rd of July. The event’s fourth instalment brought together South African designers from a variety of fields of design such as, fashion, ceramics, furniture and jewellery design. A panel of 12 industry experts were assigned the tough task of picking winners from seven categories, which are: Icon, future Found, Apprentice, Maker to Market, Manufacture, Object that Moves and Design with Purpose.
The award show is created not merely to celebrate South African talent but also to garner much needed support for aspiring designers who have created products that are worthy of a place in the local and international marketplace. Some of this year’s winners include.
Winners of the Design with Purpose award the company headed by young entrepreneurs designs schoolbags from recycled materials and includes a solar panel pocket that charges while children walk to, around and from school. Thereafter they can be used as a light for kids to study at night should they have limited access to electricity.
Pinda Furniture Design
Against the odds Pinda Furniture Design, founded by Siyanda Mbele earned the attention of event judges and is the proud recipient of the Future Found award. The design start up will be mentored by relevant Design Foundation board members for a full year and will showcase products at the popular 100% Design South Africa exhibition.
Dokter and Misses
The husband and wife duo (Adrian Hugo and Katy Taplin) landed the coveted Icon Award. The company is recognised for earning both local and international attention with work on show at Beauty – Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. They also featured at an exhibition of African design at R & Company in New York in 2015. Additionally, the duo also exhibits with Southern Guild at the top globally recognised design shows around the world. The company specialises in creating customised art deco pieces for luxury homes and top hospitality venues around the world.
The design pieces and the entrepreneurs showcased at this award ceremony have only improved year after year. Companies continued to stun guests with originality, innovation and commercial efforts made to bring products to the local and international market. Hooray to the 2016’s winners!
